Lawrence family: #huntingfamilyfriday

It's #huntingfamilyfriday again and we are excited to introduce you to the Lawrence family from South Alabama.  We met Dad, Russell, on instagram (@Russell4570) where we immediately recognized how much he enjoys spending time outdoors; hunting, fishing, and kayaking -  but even more apparent was how often that time in the outdoors is accompanied by his kids.  Russell is a great example of a hunting daddy and perhaps that's due to the great hunting dad example he had growing up.  Read on to learn about how Russell cherishes time with his own kids outdoors because of a man that never had to act as his hunting Dad, but he did; and that has had a lasting impression on Russell to this day.

Who is in your hunting family:  Dad Russell, Mom Lisa, Daughter Reagan (11years), and son Jake (7years).

When did each of you learn to hunt/fish:    I did not grow up with a hunting dad myself but I was fortunate to have a “hunting dad” named James Grayson Sr. that took me hunting with my friend James Grayson Jr. From age 14-present  Mr. James treated me like a son and taught me all about the great outdoors.  He is still like my father and I love him dearly.

My wife grew up on her dads poultry farm and often went squirrel hunting and fishing with her father.  Together we have ensured that our children experience everything the outdoors has to offer.  Reagan and Jake both started going hunting with me when they were 3 years old.  And each of them killed their first deer when they were only 5 years old.

Why is hunting important to your family:  because, I know from experience, that there are no other memories that last as long as those made outdoors

What is your 'can't hunt/fish without' accessory:  That one is easy,  I can’t hunt or fish without my children.  I have always been a big outdoors guy and to this day I am that one guy in Alabama who hasn't watched a college football game because I'd rather be outside.  At this point in our children’s life, I always feel like I'd be missing something if I have to go without them.

Have any lessons learned to share:  “Mr. James Grayson”  - This man had nothing to gain by taking his son's friend hunting and fishing.  His son's friend (me) had no father present and I found out later in life that at the hunting club back then some other members complained about Mr. James taking me hunting because I didn’t have a family member paying dues.  I found out years later from guys who were there back then, that Mr. James paid my dues to the hunting club and to this day has never mentioned it.  4 years worth of dues and never spoke a word.    That is a powerful “Lesson Learned.”  I can’t explain this lesson other than I will always “pay it forward” for as long as I am able.  Every chance I get!
